Department of Electrical Engineering

The Department of Electrical Engineering is part of Aalto University School of Electrical Engineering effective 1st January, 2011. The department came into being on 1.1.2008, when a major restructuring at the then Helsinki University of Technology brought the electromechanics, power systems and high voltage engineering, and power electronics laboratories into a single department.

The primary function of the Department of Electrical Engineering is to provide quality teaching and conduct high level research in these areas. The department at present consists of seven professorships, the oldest of which was established in 1908, and around 50 researchers and post-graduate students. There are approximately 100 undergraduate students enrolled in the department's degree programmes.

The major study areas in the department's degree programme are:

  • Electrical engineering
  • Power systems
  • Electric Drives

Students graduating from the Department of Electrical Engineering have very good employment and career prospects. A strong electrical manufacturing industry and energy sector support strong business and industrial growth, and a robust and efficient energy infrastructure is essential for the wellbeing of today's society.
